ABC Wednesday ~ J

J is for Jay!

Last week on a particularly nice, almost warm, sunny day I went for a ski all by myself. I stopped for a rest at the Gazebo and while I was enjoying a drink of water and a banana, a curious Gray Jay ( Canada Jay) sat on the eave of the Gazebo eyeing my snack.

So I shared my banana with my new little friend. Jays of course, with eat almost anything and will sit quite close to you and even eat out of your hand. At first I just let him pick at the banana peel. In this picture he seems to be thinking, "Is this all I get?"

Then I gave him a more substantial piece, which he really enjoyed. I have also heard Jays refered to as "Whiskey Jacks". I'm not sure where that nickname came from but I am sure there is a story behind it.

Please visit ABC Wednesday for more ideas brought to you by the letter J

Your Jay is quite different to the bird we have with the same name in the UK!

I'm not sure I'd recognize a whiskey jack if I saw one...though that is the name I've heard people use. Very cool that he ate part of your banana!

I don't think I've ever seen a Gray Jay - do they screech like Blue Jays?

He's so unlike the jays that hang out around my house in the early spring and clean winter bugs, etc. out of the gutters. Nice photos!

Hey, that's me! LOL!

Your jays are nothing like ours. Ours are pink/buff coloured birds underneath with dark grey wings and tail, and a startling white and iridescent blue bar on each wing. And they are NOISY!!

The few that I've seen have also been rather shy.

The common jays around here all sport bright blue feathers. The Stellar's jays are particularly bold. I have had one swoop down at a picnic and snatch an entire sandwich from my hand - and he didn't even say thank you!

How very kind of the jay to pose for you like that. Did you tell it it was starring on ABC Wednesday?

He is a bold little thing, isn't he?! I love the photos, even more so for the story that goes along with them :)
