M is for Moldow
Moldow (a.k.a. moldown or maldow) is a local term for beard-moss which is actually a lichen that hangs from the branches of spruce trees. When I was a child we also called it moose moss because, of course, moose enjoy munching on it. You can check out this word and many others in The Dictionary of Newfoundland English.
The way it hangs from the branches always reminds me of how my mom would hang tinsel on our Christmas tree. Though she appreciated a beautifully decorated tree, she had little patience for fussing with details. My dad would usually take over and hang each strand individually.

I just love the way nature decorates the somewhat plain spruce tree.

This moss looks a lot like Spanish moss that grows in the south. Interesting that it grows on spruce trees and is a favorite moose munch.

This is an education. Moss I would have got but not technical name. Lovely moist images.
A great example for the letter M. The moss does look the way I used to put tinsel on the tree myself. I would loose patience before the process was over.
Great photos. We remeber seening them in Charleston, South Carolina. It was hallmark of the South. I wonder are they the same as yours?

Oh, interesting! I never would have guessed it was a lichen - I only think of the short, scruffy lichens on rocks and such.
Like others, I'm reminded of the Spanish Moss we see all over our Live Oaks down south here :)
